What is the national debt?

The national debt is what the state owes, primarily through issued government bonds and treasury bills. It builds up when the state spends more than it collects in taxes and other revenue over a period, financing the difference by borrowing.

How should the figure be interpreted?

A rising national debt in kronor is not, by itself, a sign of a weak economy — what usually matters is the size of the debt relative to GDP (the debt ratio), and why the debt is changing. Sweden has historically had a relatively low debt ratio by international comparison.

Who is responsible for the national debt?

The Swedish National Debt Office (Riksgälden) is the government agency that manages the state's borrowing and administers the national debt on behalf of parliament and government.

The national debt is fetched from SCB's open statistics API (which in turn draws on Riksgälden's own accounting) and updates monthly. The counter above simulates a rate of change between updates, based on the latest monthly change.
